In this rapidly evolving cryptocurrency and Web3 landscape, recently on February 5, 2024, the Web3 community Ethereum Name Service (ENS), and domain registrar giant GoDaddy reveal their collaboration. With this collaboration, users can easily link their Web2 domain with .eth domains without any extra cost.
GoDaddy collaboration with ENS and DNS
However, ENS a domain name system (DNS), offers users the ability to register human-readable domain names on the Web3, simplifying complex wallet addresses and providing various useful features. With this collaboration, now users can easily and effortlessly link their .eth domain with their traditional URLs without any complexity and high gas fees which previously haunted them for many years.
Following, this significant development in the realm of Web 3, the president of GoDaddy Paul Nicks made a statement that this collaboration between Web 3 and Web2 is a fusion between domain name and blockchain technology. And these technologies directly or indirectly benefit Web2 and Web3 ecosystems.
Additionally, following this development, ENS introduced a new smart contract resolution process. This resolution process not only allows DNS domain holders to link their Web2 domain effortlessly but also allows them to experience enhanced control over these evolving decentralized identities.
Unstoppable’s new competitor – GoDaddy
This collaboration of GoDaddy with ENS looks similar to Unstoppable which allows users to purchase .eth domains with payment methods and better functionality for managing domains in July last year. However, the domains that are purchased with Unstoppable are registered with ENS smart contracts, and they have the same capabilities as those of ENS domains.
Additionally, Nick Johnson, the founder of ENS, highlighted the practicality of the collaboration by providing a real-world example: “Beyonce owns Beyonce. xyz, and now she can set up a wallet just by going to the GoDaddy page and entering her address.” In this scenario, Beyonce. xyz seamlessly becomes her wallet identifier.
Johnson advocated for a pragmatic approach, stating, “I think naming and Web3 work better when we don’t try to pretend that legacy systems don’t exist. Instead, we should build systems that work off and build on top of existing systems.” This perspective highlights the importance of integrating new technologies into established frameworks, fostering a more user-friendly and accessible experience for individuals navigating the intersection of traditional and blockchain-based systems.
