Today, January 3, 2024, marks the birth anniversary of the world’s biggest cryptocurrency, Bitcoin (BTC), which was introduced by Satoshi Nakamoto on January 3, 2009. Since its beginning, the realm of cryptocurrency has witnessed various incidents, with some critics labeling it as a scam and associating it with illegal transactions. However, due to its widespread adoption, many of these concerns have dispersed.
Crypto industry evolution: From bans to global hubs
The crypto industry has experienced several ups and downs, especially in its early stages, when many countries, including India and the United States, attempted to ban it due to its nature. However, today, nations worldwide are competing to become crypto hubs, aiming to attract crypto firms to boost both crypto adoption and their economic growth.
Financial giants embrace Cryptocurrency technology
The signs of adaptation are evident as numerous major banks, such as Bank of America, Standard Chartered Bank, HSBC, BNP Paribas, Société Générale (SocGen), Citibank, UBS, and others, are backing and praising crypto technology (Blockchain). As of January 3, 2024, a wide range of investors are consistently entering the digital assets space, attracted by its innovative technology.
The digital industry now owns a market capitalization surpassing $1.7 trillion, and in 2021, this figure surged to $3 trillion. Unfortunately, regulatory concerns and instances of fraud on some exchanges caused a decline. However, notable asset management firms such as BlackRock, Fidelity, VanEck, and WisdomTree are actively seeking approval for their Bitcoin ETF (Exchange Traded Fund) products, aiming to contribute to the industry’s recovery and reclaim its market capitalization.
This move aims to provide an easily accessible investment product for those unfamiliar with or hesitant about direct investments in Bitcoin or digital assets. Investors, financial institutions, and analysts now commonly refer to Bitcoin as “digital gold.” Countries like El Salvador have even made Bitcoin legal tender, and several other smaller nations are following a similar path.
Global Crypto ownership: A growing community
Within the crypto industry, Bitcoin has gained significant adoption worldwide, with over half a billion (420 million) crypto owners globally. The top crypto owners hail from India (93 million), the US (48 million), and Vietnam (20 million).

Examining Bitcoin’s price, it has yielded substantial returns for its holders. From 2015 to 2023, the price of Bitcoin surged by over 173,000%. While there were occasional significant surges or minor drops each year due to various reasons, the overall trend for Bitcoin over this period has been one of significant gains.
