What will they do with the bond money?
Societe Generale plans to use the net proceeds from the bond sale to finance or refinance sustainable activities. They want to highlight their dedication to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles.
The digital format of the bonds also promise enhanced transparency, traceability, and faster transaction settlements. The move is viewed as a strategic first step towards leveraging blockchain as a data repository and certification tool. It will foster global transparency on ESG and impact data.
AXA Investment Managers that represent AXA France, secured €5 million worth of bonds through a joint blockchain experiment. They used the euro-pegged stablecoin EURCV issued by SG-FORGE.
Hong Kong and its Tokenized Green Bonds
The global landscape of green bonds and tokenization was first inaugurated by Hong Kong. It has also made history by selling the world’s first tokenized green bonds valued at $102 million.
The issuers wanted to reinforce the city’s commitment to sustainable finance. The bond is being governed by Hong Kong law and uses blockchain tokenization platform GS DAP from Goldman Sachs.
Tokenization takes over
In October 2023, a BNY Mellon survey revealed that 70% of institutional investors expressed a willingness to “increase their digital asset activity” if credible institutions offered services like custody and execution. The survey reflected the industry’s cautious but optimistic approach towards digital assets.
BNY Mellon predicted the total value of tokenized assets to soar over 50,000% to $16 trillion by 2030.
Societe Generale’s pioneering move, coupled with global developments, signals a transformative era in finance. Blockchain and tokenization are becoming integral components of traditional financial institutions’ strategies. They will slowly shape the future of sustainable and transparent finance.
