The crypto community is eagerly awaiting the approval of a spot Bitcoin ETF (Exchange Traded Fund), but there seems to be a lack of discussion regarding the potential fees associated with it. Recently, Eric Balchunas, an ETF expert and analyst, posted on X (formerly Twitter), asking community members to speculate on the fees for BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF before the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) approval.
Fee speculations for BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF
In his post, Balchunas suggested that BlackRock might opt for a 0.47% fee, although it remains unconfirmed. He encouraged community members to share their guesses in response. MatrixPort, however, previously reported that firms anticipating the approval of a spot Bitcoin ETF are considering fees in the range of 0.7% to 1%. Meanwhile, Grayscale currently charges a 2% fee for GBTC (Grayscale Bitcoin Trust) but is seeking to convert it into a spot Bitcoin ETF.
Experts in the ETF industry are particularly interested in the fees for BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF due to the company’s reputation for offering low-cost investment options. While the fees for their proposed products have not been officially disclosed, historical trends suggest that they will likely be significantly lower than what GBTC charges, according to Bloomberg.
Intense fee competition in the ETF arena
In the ETF arena, where established players like BlackRock and Invesco are competing, fee competition is intense. This mirrors fee wars observed in other ETF categories, such as BlackRock undercutting rivals in collateralized loan obligation ETFs.
Nate Geraci, president of The ETF Store, emphasizes the importance of fees in the success of Bitcoin ETFs. Analyzing Ether-futures ETF filings, Geraci notes that competitors are aiming for fees as low as 0.19%. He advises Grayscale to be prepared for a substantial fee reduction, potentially from 200 basis points to 20 basis points, to effectively compete in this high-stakes market with significant potential assets and revenue at stake as reported by Bloomberg.
Despite all these discussions, Bitcoin and altcoins are experiencing a significant surge amid the potential approval of a Bitcoin ETF. As the deadline for approval approaches, we may see a further price surge in crypto assets as well as their related stocks.
