Many crypto mining machines from China remained stuck at US ports for months. However, a new report from Reuters claims that the U.S. government has now started returning seized crypto mining equipment from China, as shared by two industry leaders.
Notably, cryptocurrency miners used very powerful computers to compete to see who could solve the hardest math problems. The blockchain is the technology behind digital currencies. This process helps keep it up to date, and miners are rewarded with new cryptocurrency.
OFFICIALS MAKE IT HARD FOR MINERS
“Thousands of mining units have been released,” said Taras Kulyk, the CEO of cryptocurrency equipment broker Synteq Digital. Notably, up to 10,000 units were stuck at different U.S. ports at one point. He also said that some officials at U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) made things hard for the Bitcoin mining industry and seemed to be against it.
Blockspace says that at the end of last year, U.S. Customs and the Federal Communications Commission started seizing some bitcoin mining equipment. Some of the machines may have been held back because they had chips from Sophgo. It is a Chinese chip company that is facing trade restrictions for doing business in the US.
MORE TROUBLE BETWEEN THE U.S. AND CHINA
Tensions between the U.S. and China are at higher right now because of the ongoing trade war and security concerns raised by U.S. authorities. At the same time, an unknown amount of cryptocurrency mining equipment is being released. These concerns have been around ever since the later months of the administration of former President Joe Biden and looks like this issue adds more heat to this trade war.
While some of the seized shipments are now being returned, Ethan Vera, COO of Luxor Technology, pointed out that most of them remain held. The CEO of Synteq Digital, Vera and Taras Kulyk, said that authorities had expressed worries about radio frequency emissions from the mining equipment, but these concerns were not taken seriously, suggesting that industry experts disregarded these issues.
The crypto mining industry believes that some U.S. officials don’t support Bitcoin mining, which made the situation even tougher.
Sectors can be affected?
- Telecommunications (like 5G networks)
- Computer hardware
- Cryptocurrency mining equipment
U.S. WORRIED ABOUT CHINESE COMPANIES
This is part of a larger trend in which the U.S. government is closely watching technology made in China, especially in areas like computers and telecommunications.
The United States is worried about the security of equipment made in other countries, especially by Chinese companies, because they think it could be used for spying or other bad things. As a result, the government has been putting limits on the import of some tech items. These worries have now spread to equipment used for cryptocurrency mining.
Why is the U.S. worried?
- They don’t fully trust Chinese-made tech.
- They fear foreign companies might misuse the technology.
- They want to protect their businesses.
So, while some mining machines are being returned, many are still stuck, making it tough for companies that depend on them.
