Another day, another major development in the ongoing legal case against the giant cryptocurrency exchange Binance’s former CEO, Changpeng Zhao (CZ). In a recent court filing on Wednesday, U.S. prosecutors asked the court to reverse its decision allowing CZ to travel to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Prosecutors seek to halt CZ’s travel plans
The prosecutors argued that there is a staggering risk if CZ moves to the UAE, as there are concerns that he may not return to the U.S. They emphasized that CZ has significant assets and a strong bond with the UAE government, making extradition challenging.
As of Tuesday, a U.S. magistrate judge granted billionaire CZ’s request to return to the UAE before his sentencing in February 2024. To secure this permission, he agreed to a substantial $175 million bond, backed by $15 million in cash in trust and the commitment of three responsible individuals who offered property or cash, as reported by Todayq News.

Allegations against CZ and proposed plea deal
The allegations against CZ were that he directed Binance to allow U.S. customers to use the platform without proper know-your-customer or anti-money laundering checks.
However, the ex-CEO faces up to 10 years in jail but might only serve 18 months due to a request deal. The deal includes a $50 million fine, and CZ has agreed to resign. This arrangement appears to have spared him from the severe punishments faced by other notable crypto criminals.
Following this massive criminal case against the biggest cryptocurrency exchange, Binance, the overall cryptocurrency landscape is suffering. Additionally, as of writing, the top cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Solana (SOL) are showing strong bullish momentum. In the last 24 hours, positive movements of 2.6%, 3.6%, and 5.8% were observed for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana, respectively.
