Vivek Ramaswamy, the Republican presidential candidate who pledged a radical shift in the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and a comprehensive approach to digital assets policy, has decided to suspend his campaign after a fourth-place finish in Iowa.
What Did Vivek Ramaswamy say?
Ramaswamy, in his concession speech, thanked his supporters and announced his endorsement for former President Donald Trump. He revealed plans to join Trump at a rally in New Hampshire to discuss their vision for the future of the country.
According to Ramaswamy, his plan for crypto placed a strong emphasis on protecting unhosted digital wallets and software developers. Classifying most cryptocurrencies as commodities, and drastically decreasing the SEC’s power in the crypto industry.
“A big part of what we’re missing today is clarity from our regulators,” Ramaswamy emphasized according to sources. “What we’re going to have is rescinding any of those regulations that are allowing the regulatory state to go after perfectly legal behavior.”
During a Republican leadership debate in December, Ramaswamy stated the necessity for regulations to catch up with the swift dynamics of digital assets. He focused on the shortcomings of the current framework,“The fact that SBF was able to do what he did FTX shows that whatever they have is the current framework isn’t working,” he said.
His opinions
Ramaswamy criticized SEC Chair Gary Gensler for the lack of clarity on whether Ethereum is a regulated security. “It’s nothing short of embarrassing that Gary Gensler, the SEC chair, couldn’t even confirm in front of Congress whether Ethereum is a regulated security,” he stated during the December debate.
Earlier this year, a disclosure revealed Ramaswamy’s holdings between $100,001 – $250,000 of Bitcoin in a Coinbase account. Additionally, he has holdings ranging from $15,001 to $50,000 in Ether. Ramaswamy’s decision to suspend his campaign raises questions about the future of crypto-friendly policies in U.S. politics. People in the crypto world liked him because he talked about clear rules, keeping developers safe, and cutting down on SEC control.
Vivek Ramaswamy hitting pause on his run for president might shake up how politicians think about digital money. It’s like a big moment in how politics and crypto talk to each other. Now, people are wondering if he’s still on board with crypto and what could happen with the rules. This move raises some interesting questions.
