Cryptocurrency markets are highly volatile, and even minor rumors can significantly impact them, as seen in the past. A recent rumor regarding the approval of BlackRock’s spot Bitcoin ETF not only affected the overall market but also led to the liquidation of a substantial $72 million within minutes.
Roblox denies XRP acceptance as payment
On October 17, 2023, news surfaced claiming that the online gaming giant Roblox was accepting XRP as a form of payment. However, on October 18, 2023, Roblox issued a statement to clarify that this information was entirely inaccurate and confirmed that they do not support XRP as a payment method.
Late in the evening on Monday, October 16, 2023, the payment processor BitPay posted on X (formerly Twitter) that XRP token holders could easily purchase items in free-to-play games like Roblox and Smite using Xsolla services. Additionally, it was mentioned that Xsolla would now accept XRP through BitPay as a payment method for games such as Roblox and Smite.
BitPay’s misstep in Promoting XRP for Roblox and Smite
Later, after Roblox’s clarification, BitPay deleted the tweet. BitPay’s CMO, Zielke, confirmed that the tweet contained an error, as there would be more similar tweets about merchants accepting cryptocurrencies in the future.
Before the tweet’s removal, it rapidly went viral, possibly due to previous news regarding XRP, like HSBC’s collaboration with FCF Pay to enable XRP payments for users to settle mortgage bills and loans. This could have contributed to the tweet’s overall attention.
Roblox’s payment method remains unchanged
Upon recent testing, it was discovered that when attempting to purchase Robux in-game through Roblox’s website, only U.S. payment options, including credit cards, debit cards, gift cards, PayPal, and others, were accepted, with no option for cryptocurrency or XRP.
Since this collaboration was not as significant, it did not have a substantial impact on the market, unlike past rumors surrounding BlackRock’s spot Bitcoin ETF. Therefore, in such cases, it is advisable to cross-check information with both parties to ensure accuracy and avoid potential misinterpretations.
