UK Reform Party leader Nigel Farage is facing a formal parliamentary standards inquiry after allegedly failing to declare a £5 million, approximately $6.7 million, gift from crypto billionaire and Reform party backer Christopher Harborne. The UK Parliamentary Standards Commissioner has opened an investigation into whether Farage breached House of Commons registration rules by not disclosing the payment after becoming a member of parliament.
The inquiry was reported by the BBC on Wednesday. The Conservative Party is understood to have written to the parliamentary standards watchdog requesting the investigation be opened.
Farage has defended his position, stating he was under “no obligation” to declare the gift, arguing it was received before his election to the House of Commons in 2024 and therefore fell outside the scope of MP registration requirements. Critics, however, contend that the rules require members to register prior gifts once they take office, regardless of when those gifts were received. The Standards Commissioner’s decision to open an inquiry suggests the question is not considered settled.
A pattern of crypto-linked scrutiny
The parliamentary probe is the latest in a series of regulatory and political questions surrounding Farage’s ties to the digital asset industry, and it arrives at a moment when UK lawmakers and regulators are paying closer attention to the role of crypto-linked money in politics more broadly.
Last month, the UK Liberal Democrats called on the Financial Conduct Authority to investigate whether Farage breached market conduct rules by appearing in a promotional video for Stack BTC, a Bitcoin investment platform, while holding a financial stake in the company. Farage subsequently disclosed a $286,000 equity investment in Stack BTC, acquired through his media vehicle Thorn In The Side in March, representing a 6.31% stake in the company. That disclosure came after the promotional video had already been widely circulated.
Taken together, the Stack BTC matter and the Harborne gift inquiry paint a picture of a senior UK politician with substantial and growing financial ties to the crypto industry, ties that are now attracting formal regulatory and parliamentary scrutiny simultaneously.
Who is Christopher Harborne?
Christopher Harborne is a British-Thai billionaire with significant interests in aviation and digital assets. He has been among the largest financial backers of Reform UK and its predecessor political vehicles, making him one of the most consequential crypto-linked donors in British political history. His involvement in funding Farage’s political operations predates the Reform Party’s current form and has been a matter of public record, though the specific £5 million gift at the centre of the current inquiry was not previously registered on Farage’s parliamentary interests declaration.
Broader implications for crypto in UK politics
The inquiry arrives at a sensitive moment for the UK’s approach to digital assets. The Financial Conduct Authority is actively developing the UK’s post-Brexit crypto regulatory framework, and the government has positioned London as a potential hub for regulated digital asset activity. Against that backdrop, high-profile cases linking undisclosed crypto wealth to senior politicians carry reputational implications that extend beyond any individual investigation.
Whether the Standards Commissioner ultimately finds a breach, and what sanction, if any, would follow, remains to be seen. The inquiry is ongoing and no finding has been made. For now, the case places crypto’s growing influence on UK political financing firmly in the public spotlight.
