In this rapidly evolving cryptocurrency landscape, where countries across the world are in the race to become crypto hubs, a significant announcement was made by the Japanese Cabinet in parliament on February 19, 2024. The announcement states that venture capital firms (VCs) can now invest in Web3 projects.
Japanese Cabinet announcement on Web 3 investments
According to a recent report by coinpost, this decision by the Japanese government to allow investment business limited partnerships (LPS) to acquire and hold crypto assets, signaled a significant shift in the investment landscape. This legal reform opens new doors for venture capital firms (VCs) to invest in Web3 projects, ultimately lowering hurdles for Japan’s emerging digital economy.
Earlier, LPS was commonly used by VCs to invest in unlisted ventures but now it will have the flexibility to invest in digital currency as well. The previous regulatory constraints compelled Web3 projects to seek funding from overseas VCs, presenting a substantial barrier to entry for Japanese startups.
However, under the amended rules, Web3 companies can now easily secure funding domestically, allowing them to kickstart their businesses with a broader range of investment options. Previously, LPS investments were restricted to traditional assets like stocks, limiting the growth potential of innovative projects rooted in virtual currencies.
Industry leaders, such as Kunimitsu, the CEO of Thirdverse, are excited about the recent government decision. They believe it will significantly benefit Web3 startups in Japan. Kunimitsu sees this move as a game-changer, hoping it will spark a positive transformation for many Web3 projects in the country, providing them with a great opportunity to thrive.
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has revealed that the “Bill for Partial Amendment of the Industrial Competitiveness Enhancement Act, etc. to Promote the Creation of New Businesses and Investment in Industry” is currently in session. The bill, which includes the new freedom for LPS, is expected to be submitted to the ordinary session of the Diet.
Positive industry expectations and collective impact
Notably, overseas projects are also expressing keen interest in the LPS rule revisions. Observers expect a surge in innovative Web3 projects emanating regularly from Japan, aligning with the global trend toward decentralized technologies.
The association’s survey, containing VCs, Web3 startups, virtual currency exchanges, and law firms, highlighted the positive effects of the proposed rule revisions. The collective expectation is that these changes will not only simplify the investment process but also elevate the popularity of Web3 businesses in Japan.
