During this deadly ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, there are increasing concerns about the misuse of cryptocurrencies. This issue has gained significant attention among investors and several regulatory boards as it can be used for various purposes, both legitimate and illegitimate.
Israeli authorities act against Hamas-linked Crypto accounts
Following the trouble of funding for the Palestinian militant group Hamas following the October 7 attacks, Israeli law enforcement has taken action to freeze more than 100 crypto accounts on the world’s largest crypto exchange, Binance. Additionally, authorities have sought information on an additional 200 crypto accounts, primarily hosted on Binance, as reported by the local media.
The conflict rapidly soared when Hamas launched attacks on Israel, leading to war and a blocking of the Palestinians. This initiated Israeli law enforcement to collaborate with both the public and cryptocurrency firms to block the flow of funds to Hamas, which is specified as a terrorist organization by the United States, the United Kingdom, and several other jurisdictions worldwide.
Binance’s cooperation with Israeli authorities
Binance acknowledged its cooperation with Israeli authorities in curbing terror financing last week. The exchange disclosed that it had “blocked” a “small number” of accounts on its platform, without specifying the exact count.
The local media report also cited an unnamed Binance employee who mentioned the need to identify Binance customers associated with each address Hamas uses to solicit donations.
Tether collaborates with NBCTF to prevent terror financing
Stablecoin issuer Tether has also taken actions to address the issue, disclosing that it froze funds in 32 cryptocurrency addresses linked to terrorism in Israel and Ukraine. Tether is collaborating with Israel’s National Bureau for Counter-Terror Financing (NBCTF) in this endeavor.

Combating terrorist financing in cryptocurrencies requires strict compliance with international sanctions by crypto exchanges and issuers.
The situation underscores the broader challenge of striking a balance between financial privacy and the prevention of illicit activities. As the conflict continues, authorities and the crypto industry are working together to prevent funds from reaching designated terrorist organizations.
