An American publicly traded company, Coinbase got a green flag from the regulators of Argentina to widen services in the country, when the operations have been done since 2019.
Coinbase revealed in a January 28 blog post that the National Securities Commission of Argentina (CNV) permitted a virtual asset service provider (VASP) registration for Coinbase, permitting it to commence providing various services, consisting of local payment methods in the Argentine peso.
Initially, Coinbase launched crypto-to-crypto conversions and trading in Argentina in April 2019. As per Coinbase, it can now function within the country’s legal framework for digital assets as it steadily launches more services over the coming months.
Promoting crypto literacy
A spokesperson for Coinbase asserted that the exchange formerly did not have a license but was not working illegally through its operations in the country. The spokesperson also mentioned that Coinbase could not function the way it will now.
Before this, some utilities were offered within the legal substructure, but now, with the license, it will be able to provide more products in pesos. Binance got the same VASP approval in Argentina in October 2024, becoming listed as an official crypto service provider in the country.

Crypto becomes a necessity for Argentinians
The director for the Americas at Coinbase, Fabio Plein revealed that the initiatives will provide knowledge along with Confidence to the natives of Argentina as they are required to sail across the opportunities and challenges of the crypto ecosystem.
The director further added that for the majority of the residents of Argentina, crypto is not just an investment, but it is a necessity for recovering control over their financial futures. In May 2024, reports mentioned that Argentina might seek to imitate El Salvador’s approach to Bitcoin to help its economy.
Argentina overtook Brazil
As per Coinbase, around five million residents out of 46 million in Argentina use crypto every day. The State of Crypto report for Q4 of 2024 of Coinbase suggests that 76% of adults in Argentina see crypto as a solution to some of their financial frustrations, like inflation and increased transaction costs.
The Chainalysis report released in October 2024 mentions that Argentina overtook Brazil as the top Latin American country with respect to estimated crypto inflows by users, having inflows estimating $91 billion between July 2023 and July 2024.
As per Chainalysis, the stablecoin market of Argentina is also one of the biggest in the world in terms of stablecoin transactions.
