Circle has expanded its blockchain intellectual property portfolio after acquiring nearly 1,000 blockchain-related patents from IBM, a move aimed at strengthening its position in digital finance and enterprise blockchain technology. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
The acquisition includes more than 680 patent families covering a wide range of technologies, including blockchain infrastructure, banking, financial services, insurance, supply chain verification, enterprise systems and secure cloud operations. The portfolio significantly expands Circle’s intellectual property holdings and gives the company one of the largest blockchain patent portfolios in the United States.
According to Circle, the newly acquired patents will support the continued development of its digital financial infrastructure, including USDC, the Circle Payments Network and its Arc blockchain platform. The company also plans to leverage the intellectual property to accelerate the development of AI-powered financial products and enterprise blockchain solutions.
Circle has increasingly positioned itself as an infrastructure provider for the digital asset economy rather than solely a stablecoin issuer. The company has continued expanding services that enable businesses, financial institutions and developers to integrate blockchain-based payments and tokenised financial products into their operations.
IBM has long been one of the most active patent holders in blockchain technology, having invested heavily in enterprise blockchain applications over the past decade. While the company has reduced its direct focus on blockchain products in recent years, its patent portfolio remains one of the industry’s largest, spanning payments, identity management, security and distributed ledger infrastructure.
The acquisition reflects a broader trend of digital asset companies investing in proprietary technology as competition intensifies across the blockchain sector. Rather than relying solely on software development, firms are increasingly building intellectual property portfolios that can support future product innovation, licensing opportunities and strategic partnerships.
Following the announcement, Circle shares gained in early trading as investors reacted positively to the company’s latest expansion strategy. The deal further strengthens Circle’s long-term focus on building regulated blockchain infrastructure for financial institutions and enterprises worldwide.
