In the ongoing bullish market sentiment and airdrop season, where investors and retailers are seeking to make profits in the cryptocurrency landscape, hackers have compromised the official account of Beoble, a Web3-based chatting platform (formerly Twitter). According to a blockchain security firm, PeckShield, which disclosed this incident, the hackers were also caught sharing a phishing link.
Phishing link expose
Beoble is a Web3-based chatting platform supported by industry giants such as Animoca Brands, Samsung Next, HashKey Capital, and Digital Currency Group. The compromised account has been identified as the source of a phishing link aimed at deceiving users into verifying their eligibility for a purported airdrop.
As of now, Beoble’s X account remains under the control of hackers, posing a serious threat to the crypto community. Users are strongly advised against clicking on any links originating from this account until further notice.
The sophistication of this phishing attempt is unique, exploiting the verified status of Beoble’s X account to lend credibility to the airdrop scam. This tactic capitalizes on the trust users place in verified accounts, despite widespread awareness campaigns about the prevalence of such scams in the crypto space.
Scam Sniffer, a reputable source for tracking online scams, reported a significant uptick in personal crypto scams last month. Shockingly, approximately 57,000 individuals fell victim to these scams, resulting in a collective loss nearing $47 million. The majority of these fraudulent activities were executed through phishing techniques on various social media platforms, including X (formerly Twitter).
Crypto community on alert
The incident also highlights a growing trend of cybercriminals massively targeting the crypto community. As the industry evolves, it becomes crucial for users to exercise heightened caution and stay alert against malicious activities. Industry stakeholders, including Beoble and other platforms, are urged to intensify security measures to safeguard their users from such threats.
In response to this security breach, Beoble has assured its users that investigations are underway, and appropriate measures are being taken to regain control of the compromised account. Meanwhile, the broader crypto community is reminded to remain cautious, verify information independently, and report suspicious activities promptly to help combat the escalating threat of sophisticated phishing attacks.
