A leading algorithmic trading firm, Wintermute plans to widen into the United States. It has plans to start an office in New York and launch new products in the local market.
The Chief Executive Officer of the company, Evgeny Gaevoy, gave an interview with the prominent media outlet Bloomberg at the Consensus crypto conference in Hong Kong in which he highlighted the ambitions of the firm, referring to the new strategic focus on the United States.
To expand, Wintermute has plans to propose over-the-counter (OTC) products to the consumers of the United States. It targets to gradually increase the workforce. Gaevoy mentioned that the firm has also planned to onboard around five to ten employees to its existing team of 130.
Optimism for probable regulatory changes
The company is confident regarding the probable regulatory changes in the country. The company believes that advancements there could impact how other countries control virtual assets.
This confidence came after the election of Donald Trump, whose pro-crypto stand has increased anticipations for a more commending regulatory environment. At the time of his campaign, Trump placed himself as an advocate for virtual currencies, comparing it to the last government under President Joe Biden and ex-chairman of SEC Gary Gensler, who imposed more restrictive policies.
Bloomberg also mentioned that Wintermute lately safeguarded funding in a round-headed by Chinese tech giant Tencent Holdings, quoting anonymous sources. Before this, the company generated $20 million in a Series B round headed by Lightspeed Ventures in January 2021, consisting of many prominent crypto investment companies like Pantera Capital and Hack VC.
The company rocking the boat
Wintermute is rocking the boat in the crypto space, most significantly in May when it played an important role in giving liquidity as well as support for the introduction of Hong Kong’s spot Bitcoin and Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
The company works as a liquidity provider for two licensed virtual asset platforms in Hong Kong, OSL Digital Securities, along with HashKey HK Exchange. Regardless of the challenges faced by the wider crypto market, Wintermute listed a 400% growth in OTC trading volumes over 2023.
As the company makes its presence more robust in the United States, its broadening shows a wider trend of institutional adoption and regulatory involvement in the developing crypto landscape.
