The policymakers hailing from Russia have highlighted the role of the digital ruble in aiding businesses to avoid sanctions and streamline operations.
The deputy chairman of the State Duma’s economic policy committee, Artem Kiryanov believes that the central bank digital currency of Russia often termed as ruble will help streamline life for entrepreneurs, mainly those affected by sanctions.
Kiryanov also gave an interview with a local news agency in Russia in which he mentioned that the digital ruble provides a great advantage to entrepreneurs, mainly those involved in foreign trade.
He further explained that using the digital ruble would mainly aid entrepreneurs concerned with cross-border economic activities. It will help in relieving operations in between sanctions.
He threw light on the importance of the digital ruble and asserted that it promises complete transparency in government purchases, providing an essential solution for managing financial flows.
Digital ruble embracing financial discipline
Everything taking place within the substructure of the state and municipal acquisition should go through the digital ruble. It will embrace financial discipline and avoid fraud as well as unauthorized fund transfers.
The officials of Russia have been regulating its central bank digital currency since August 2023, and it is anticipated to be available for broader use by mid of this year. Elvira Nabiull earlier accepted that if the pilot projects are successful, the digital ruble will be launched in a mass implementation by July.
At the same time, she highlighted that the shift will probably take various years to complete. In the consultation paper from October 2020, the central bank encouraged citizens that the offered CBDC will complement, not return, existing cash and non-cash rubles in circulation.
In comparison, China, a prime benchmark for Russia’s efforts in digitization, has started paying civil servants in Changshu state salaries using its own CBDC, the digital yuan, to promote the adoption of the state-controlled currency.
The heavy sanctions
The head of the Banking Committee of Russia, Anatoly Aksakov believes that the digital ruble could probably render traditional banking institutions obsolete. Aksakov highlighted that the evolving landscape of financial technology could bring down the essential requirement for traditional banking institutions.
The future of banking could go through a significant transformation because of the development of blockchain technology and central bank digital currencies, as per Aksakov. After the huge invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russia has been suffering from heavy financial and economic sanctions.
The sanctions have since pushed to explore cryptocurrencies as its payment option for foreign trades.
