Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) recent approval might have triggered an uptick in speculation across digital asset markets. However, this led to a sell-the-news event. Despite Bitcoin recording an 18% correction, investors are now turning their attention to potential developments in the Ethereum (ETH) space.
Bitcoin ETF impact and market correction
According to the data, Bitcoin’s market cap surged by 68.8% since BlackRock filed for its ETF. This reflected a strong performance across digital assets. However, following the ETF approvals, Bitcoin faced an 18% decline, reaching $39.5k. However, the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust’s (GBTC) outflow of nearly $4 billion contributed to the market correction.
GBTC share price dropped by another 2% in the trading market. It is trading at an average price of $34.88, at the press time.
Ethereum’s momentum
Bitcoin price had dominated the crypto market while Ethereum was struggling to keep up. In the meantime, ETH had underperformed the altcoin market by 17%. The biggest altcoin gained over 20% compared to Bitcoin in recent weeks. This reflects a renewed optimism among investors. However, the surge in Ether prices coincided with a recent rebound in the market cap dominance.
Data suggest that Ether price is down by 3% in the last 30 days. While Bitcoin registered a drop of more than 9% at the same time. ETH is trading at an average price of $2,220, at the press time.
The report added that ETH’s derivative markets also showed an uptick in both futures and options trading volume contracts. Its markets saw a total trade volume of $21.3 billion per day. It is important to note that this jump has surpassed the average volume recorded in 2023. However, ETH’s open interest dominance bounced to around 40% following the ETF approval.
Competition among layer 1 tokens
Ethereum is not only contending with Bitcoin but it also faces tough competition from other layer 1 blockchain tokens. Solana (SOL) emerged as a standout performer in 2023 by surging over 800%. Data depicts that SOL has outperformed ETH by a huge margin. However, the SOL/BTC ratio increased by 290% since October 2023.
It is important to note that the altcoin market cap rose by nearly 69% since BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF filing. Glassnode mentioned that Ethereum scaling solutions, like as OP, ARB, and MATIC had played a crucial role in this trend. Staking and GameFi tokens also left BTC behind in the race.
